Bocajnala's 23 Deer Season
#21

Wife and I drew a special hunt in a waterfowl preserve here in Ohio.
We were assigned a unit that was 1.7 miles by 3 miles. But we had a specific parking area we had to use. I spent a while looking at maps and drove around the unit several times. Lots of water and swamps everywhere.
On the map I found a likely funnel area .8 miles from the truck. Being that this was a rifle hunt at the peak of the rut I had high hopes.
We walked in and sat down in our funnel at 0615. At 0700 we moved about 25 yards so that we could see better.
At 0750 I hit the grunt call three times and about a minute later a 6 point came right in to 25 yards. My wife made a good shot and the buck spun and disappeared into the brush. I didn't hear it crash but based on what I saw I thought she had made a good hit with the .350 Legend. I told her we would wait until 0830 before we went to track. Good thing we waited.
At 0820 I saw a nice buck step out at 55 yards. Drilled him with the .45-70 and he flipped over backwards.
We trailed hers about forty yards and found it.
A cool hunt. Her first buck and first Ohio deer. My biggest buck. Cool to double up with her. We had everything back to the truck by noon.
I wish she had shot the bigger one. But for her first buck we were taking whatever came out. And I'm happy to take him. First buck for me since 2019. ( youth hunters have taken three bucks with me the last three years though)

PA opener treated me well.
Walked into a new area and found a spot I liked on the map.
At 0730 I see some doe coming towards me.
Then the buck following behind.
The pink rifle did the job. 7mm-08 at 80 yards, high shoulder, dropped him.

I started a new job last week. So only hunting the weekends.
I'll take my kids out from 1600-dark Monday -Thursday in Ohio. Hoping one of them have some luck.

I have two doe tags in my pocket. I'll carry the .44 revolver and take one with that if given the chance.
Other than that I'm done shooting deer until the flintlock season
