All the above are good choices. Nothing wrong with either of them. I would either go with the 6.5 CM or the 7-08 personally. Also, if ammo isn't an issue you may want to look at the 350 legend. Especially if your youngster is slight of build. I got one earlier this year in a Savage Axis and that rifle can really shoot and the recoil is very minimal. IMO less than a .223/5.56.

Lots of good calibers out there to choose from. I purchased my daughter a Rem 700 youth in .243 when she was 10yrs old and she used it a couple years with no issues and harvested several deer with it. At age 12 i bought her a Rem model 7 .260 and she used it for several years before going to a full size 700 in .260 and she's still using it at age 20. If i had to do it again i would have got the .260 to begin with, it has a very mild recoil and is no doubt pure deer poison. Others to consider would be the already mentioned 25.06, .308, 7mm.08, and the 6.5 Creed, all great calibers and imo you wouldn't go wrong with either. Mike

25 06 hands down. Extremely flat shooting and no recoil. They don't run after the hit.

I'm in agreement with redgreen. 25-06 is a great caliber for people of all ages. Shoots heavier bullets 117-120 grain for deer, and has the recoil of a 243.

Often times the scopes in these packages are sub par. Now if you are at a gun shop and they offer to put a package together for you with the scope of your choice that is different. I haven't seen a lot of "retailers" offering packages that have a high quality scope on them. I'm sure they are out there......

We always started the kids off with a Marlin 336 30-30, but it's only a 150 yard gun. We are tree hunting in the woods so most shots are sub 100 yards. The 6.5 is a great choice too

The 6.5 creed is sorta kinda a modern day 250 savage, it will work fine, get him the package rifle, you can upgrade the scope when you see he's hooked on hunting.
