Nothing but spikes

1 Attachment(s)
My father in law and I manage 550
acres in west central ms and this year itís seems as though all Iíve seen are spikes. My father in law saw one small 6 point back in October but I myself have seen 7 separate spikes between two stands and not one single doe. Could this mean I need to take out a couple spikes or count myself blessed to have future larger racked bucks on our property?

not really, spikes are young bucks, with their body growing faster than it ever will again, with proper nutrition and not harsh winters, they will grow racks, you need to look into the lack of does.

thatís my main concern is where they are at. I should have added that we have no cameras up because we do belong to a deer camp in a different part of the state and thatís where all our cameras are. but as far as hunting weíve seen deer every time but theyíve been spikes and just a couple does

There is a sign above the window of my wife's "tower" blind on the inside that reads: "This year's spike is next year's 8pt." This is the first year she's bothered to adhere to it though lol..

If all your seeing is spikes you are set up in the wrong area,s Spikes and twinkies are not near mature bucks in fall and early winter.

No deer breeder is buying yearling spikes, forks, etc... when you can have 8pt yearlings...

if all you're seeing is spikes though, I wouldn't take out all the spikes on the property.

I'd try to let your bigger deer breed as much as possible...ie. don't take out that decent 2.5yo 8pt when he comes along...but good luck,

if you want some meet, I'd consider taking out the smallest spike you can if given a choice, or just taking one of the spikes...

I'd let that 6pt breed and pass on him...
