Only you can answer that. I wouldn't. But maybe you should.

The Mount is purely up to you.

It is your trophy, your hunt, your memory of that hunt.
You may never top that in the area you hunt.

Personally I wouldn’t. I think a euro would look nicer. But that is entirely up to you. How I go about it is I don’t mount anything smaller than my previous one

CalHunter 12-22-2019 07:00 AM

Is it your first buck? 10, 20 or even 30 years from now, do you think you'll look back and wish you had gotten it mounted? Everybody so far has given you pretty good advice based on experience and wisdom gained through that experience. Let us know what you decide and post some pictures.

I think I would ,it is a nice buck .But that's me .

I would it’s a unique deer but if you can’t afford it I would do a European mount

That is entirely up to you. If he is a trophy to you, and mount him.

The fact that you are asking suggests you are unsure. I suppose it depends on how long you think you may still hunt and how large the deer population is in your area. If you think you may never top this one then go ahead and mount it. But if you plan to hunt and have good access, you probably will shoot larger ones. Then again, it may be very special to you and I've seen many mounts that fall into this category. A friend at work hunted enthusiastically for a few years and then quit. I'm sure he was glad that he mounted his first buck which was smaller than yours. Many hunters have hunted for years and not had an opportunity to shoot even an 8 pointer - especially in areas where the herd is struggling.

I guess it would depend on how special of a deer it is to you. If it's your biggest in quite some time then go for it!

Think this is one of those questions,
Where if you have to ask,
The answer is NO.

The OP made a single post 2 weeks ago. He should have been able to make a decision by now. What was it?

elliotk 05-20-2020 04:18 PM

If it is your biggest to date, if it brings a smile to your face, then go for it. Please don't get caught up with what your see on TV or other large management land bucks. If you can choose a pose that will help you relive the hunt! Let us know what you decide.

No one can answer this except you. IMO every animal I shoot is a "trophy" regardless of what it scores. Its the effort and experience that determines whether you should mount it or not. Lately I've been doing european mounts for my deer only because I have enough shoulder mounts. But before I started doing the euro mounts I would just buy one of those antler mounting kits and put the antlers on them.
Bet everyone I look at takes me back to the exact hunt, what the weather was like, who I was with, how he approached, the way he was standing when I shot....basically every detail of the hunt.

Guys, this is over 6 months old and the OP has not returned to make another post, etc. I'll leave it open but I doubt the OP is going to see any responses you post at this point.

Yeah - This is my thinking!
Sometimes its not the size or point count that's most important,
It can be the hunting story.
So is there anything special about the story behind taking that deer?

The fact he is asking leans me to say NO. I never had any doubt as to which animals I wanted to get mounted. That is a personal decision and if you're asking others you have already answered your own question.

Popgunshooter 05-22-2020 06:41 PM

I got a so-so Muley in Wyoming. I had it mounted. So far it's the only out-of-state hunt I've ever been able to afford so I'm glad I did.
