Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I have hunted with both scents and have had nothing but bad luck with the fresh earth scent. I had countless deer turn away from the fresh earth scent before I realized what they were smelling. Since switching to the neutralizer I haven' t had a single deer wind me. I was just wondering if any of you have had the same results,or is earth scent just better at certain times and certain soils? And is there another scent that works better for you?

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
No scent will always trump dirt smell . I use HS Fresh Earth discs and haven' t had any probs , but I neutralize before applying them . Try making some " dirt tea" from your local woods , it may work better .

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I have used neutralizer scent for the last 4 years hunting and have never had a deer wind me. I also use scent waffers made by HS scent and those work great as well.

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I used to use the fresh earth cover scent. Now i just concentrate on being as scent free as possible. Don' t want to introduce something that may be unnatural.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions,I' ll have to check into these products. I never thought about using the neutralizer and a cover scent. I' ve never used acorn scent but with the acorns in abundance as they are this year i thought about trying it, any of you tried the acorn scent?

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I have had great success with either fox or coon cover scents. You do not need much, it is natural in most areas, easily applied to your boots and around your stand.
My own dogs have even been thrown off by it. Good Luck |

LIVE2HUNTNFISH ,
I spray the outside of my pop-up blind with acorn scent to act as a cover , and to attract does . Get the does to come and the bucks won' t be far behind . |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
Thanks Kevin, I' ll have to buy some acorn scent, I just wanted to make sure they wouldn' t turn from it.

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I use the White Acorn cover scent waffers by HS Scents. These things work great and are only about $5 for a container that consist of three waffers. I just hang them around my stand and sit back and wait. I have had deer coming up wind from me and still not pick up my scent. HS Scents just came out with Doe Estrous scent waffers so I am going to try them this year during the rut.
Good luck |

Cleetus ,
I hope they work better than the HS BucRut discs I used last year , those things sucked , and talk about smelly ! |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
Kevin1,
I will let you know. I am a little nervous about using something new when it comes to hunting. I know the White Acorn scents work, but I guess we will see about the doe estrous. |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I hunt in an oak woods and have had great sucess with the acorn scent wafers by HS. When I get to the woods spray down with the nuetrilizer. When I get to my stand I hang one acorn waffer on teh ground and I hang one in the stand.
I have not been scented since I started to do this nor have I seen any deer spooked by this. One of the coolest hunts I had was last fall, I had 22 deer running around my stand at one time with deer in all directions and not a single deer scented or picked me out. This fall I shot a doe at 10 yards and she had came from straight down wind. She got about 5 yards from my waffer and started licking her nose for a few seconds until she continued to my opening. That same night my dad was upwind of me with scent lock clothing on. We had a doe go between us who smelt him and huffed. She came by my stand nervously but never knew I wasthere. Until I have a problem with this I will definaltey continue following this routine. |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
all i have ever read about the different " flavors" of scents is that they are there to appeal to buyers. Ive read that they all work about the same because all cover up the human scent which is the main objective of the cover scent. In other words deer may smell the fresh earth scent and wont be frightened cause it doesnt smell like a predator. Im gonna try H.S. Accorn for the first time this year. Ill let you know how it works.

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
Thanks guys for all your comments! I have another question for those of you that have mentioned waffers. How long does the scent last in one waffer? Are they just one time things or do you reapply scent to them? And as long as we are talking about scents I' ll mention this, I use STILL STEAMIN doe in estrous attractor and have had great success with it. The bucks i see usually come in grunting and the whole 9 yrds. I had a small buck come in a few days ago, sniff the air, and lay down 10 feet from where i had the wick out. Just wonderig if you all use this or some other attracter.

When you are done just put the waffer back in the container and it regenerates itself. I have had my White Acorn scented ones for about three years now and they smell just as strong as the day I bought them.

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
Thanks Cleetus,
I was hoping that was what you would say because buying them every few trips could get pricey! |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I used Scent Shield Fall Blend which is both a human odor eliminator and " earth" scent all in one. It' s worked well for me this year and I haven' t been winded by a deer all year.

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I am not to sure about the dirt? Last year I used this sent and I did see deer but they never ventured into my fiering area. But, they never seemed spooked. On the other hand in the past I have used white acorn and taken deer. Ironic? Happy hunting |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I use it all the time and have not been bust by the Earth scent. Smells like dirt....

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I used the earth cover scent while hunting a ground blind last year and I had a doe within 6-8 feet behind me. If that scent spooked deer, she would have bolted.

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
i have used both and i have definatly do not like the fresh earth sent. i have just been using the neutralizer and it seems to work alot better. next time u are in the woods dig up some dirt with your hands and smell it then smell the earth scent i know you will smell the difference (smells like chemicals) so if we can smell the difference guess how much the deer will. i do use the acorn scent waffers they do seem to work

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
Duke,
I had the same opinions about the fresh earth scent. I also thought, if it hasn' t rained in a few weeks and the ground is very dry, then that might be the problem. If I had seen deer after a rain, they might not have paid any attention to me. |
RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
Well hell, after the 35+ inches we' ve gotten here in Maryland over the past two months, the earth scent might just be the way to go! If there' s a tidal wave scent, that would be the best scent ever!

RE: Fresh Earth Scent vs. Scent Neutralizer
I' m thinking an earth scent where there is snowfall may not represent the surroundings too well. I have used the Fox urine stuff of different brand names a few times. I have seen more deer with that than most other camo scents. One time a fox came running at me at about a hundred miles an hour! I think those were the plastic wafers. I have rubbed horse crap on my clothes, while hunting near a horse pasture, (make sure it' s not too fresh)! It seems like smoking seems to mask human scent. A few people in my party smoke cigarettes in their stand. They don' t seem to have a problem taking deer. They think since it is farm country, where people burn wood, it kind of fits. Who am I to say? I can' t say I get deer every year.
