.45 LC for Whitetail
 

Does anybody use .45lc for hunting whitetail? I've been wanting a Henry Big Boy some time now and would like to know its practical uses. I have food plots of different ranges. One is 75 yards which im sure .45lc would be fine for. My other fields are 125yds, 175yds, 200yds and 325yds. What would be a reasonable max distance for that rifle?

Allen is one of the guys I hunt with, and hand load for , rather regularly,
cast and use gas check,300 grain bullets, bullets from 95% WW alloy and 5% tin,
10 grains of blue dot works well, (accurate) and about 1000 fps in the rifle but your limited to about 120 yards , due to trajectory and retained energy
the bullets are lethal enough at that range for deer and hogs but don,t expect spectacular kills according to Allen
hit where you need too and they kill very well

If you keep your range to 75 yards like you say then you should have no problems tipping over a whitetail with a 45LC

Thanks for the info. Ive been using a .45-70 handy rifle on the small fields for the last 5 years or so. Just really been wanting a henry here lately. The 150yds or more fields i use my M1A. Guess i just need to go buy one and punch some paper to figure out the trajectory and my limits on distance. Thanks again.

In addition , use the right ammunition, don't use cowboy ammo. Hornady Leverevolution ammo is hotter than a lot of others and it shoots well out of my two .45 colts.

Yeah thats what i use in my .45-70. I've never had any problems with it. I have a ton of cowboy loads i use in my single actions and conversions that i may use for punching paper with the henry this summer though. Also I found some underwood ammo that caught my attention, may have to give it a try as well.
