10 point buck walked broad side across a field 200+ yards from my blind. He stopped looked up at me. I shot. Aimed heart. He fell, got up walked 50 yards and layed down .. Then he got staggered across the field continuing this for 10 mins falling and getting up disappereared in a thicket. I waited 2 hours then started tracking.. I spent 5 hours grid searching and no blood or sign.. id rather miss then wound . 243 Winchester...

You should have put more rounds into him. Next time, shoot until the animal is dead.

without pictures, hard to say, but I will toss out another option. You are infront of the shoulder, and not in the chest, not a dead deer. IF the blood doesn't look like lung, no bubbles, not pink etc, then this might be it. The bleeding at first is huge, then peters out because it clots and stops bleeding.

I can't tell if the blood is dark because he waited 5.5 hours before tracking or if it can indicate anything about what the bullet hit. Had a lung been hit, would there still have been bubbles at that point (assuming he had really taken a closeup shot of the blood to where we could tell)?

.243 usually has a golf ball size exit wound, and they don't go far. What grain ammo?

I use 100gr, my buddy uses 85gr. Same result.
