RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
Basically, it all boils down to this:
There are 4 kinds of White tail hunters. No. 1, The Buck hunter No 2, The doe hunter No. 3, The deer hunter No. 4, The poacher In my book, the top 3 are A-OK. No. 4? I hope ther' s a warden around the corner or hiding in the brush. Russ |
RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
My theory is this: There are basically two kinds of deer hunters, those who see deer on purpose because they know what they are doing, and those who see deer by accident because they get lucky. The guy who can see deer on purpose isnt as likely to shoot a little buck because he knows he will have plenty of opportunities to see deer and can choose a big buck when one comes along. The guy who sees deer by accident shoots the first buck he sees, usually a little one, because he does not have the confidence that he will see plenty more deer, and he doesnt want to go home with nothing.

RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
I might shoot a small buck that would still be good eating. I NEVER SHOOT BIG OLD BUCKS. I am not a trophy hunter Its those big ones I like to watch and then see them go on thier way. We are encourged to shoot does and the season is even automaticly extended to fill doe tags. There are just to many. I do like to watch those big boys. They got big and old and I won' t be the one to kill them. They taste like hell anyway. I got one real big buck years ago and only if I saw one much bigger would I even think about shooting it. As I got older I appreciate old things more.

RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
I do get a laugh out of several people that always tell me that I am so lucky because the bucks that I kill are always large mature bucks. My response is always that if you want to shoot big bucks ,you have to stop shooting the little bucks. If I really want the extra meat (which is rarely the case because I usually have plenty of elk which I prefer anyways)I kill a doe on the last evening.Since we have a good population of deer in our area killing does does not hurt the deer herd.

RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
its there right too if they want too. But as I am hunting longer I find myself looking to out do last years deer. Maybe its just natural progression maybe not too but its there choice as long as its legal.

RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
im 17 and i have shot 2 little bucks a 2x2(my first deer) and a 3x3 and 2 does, i am going out this sat. and hopefuly, i will fill with a nice mature buck, but if i dont then i will settle for a little buck, im not ashamed of taking a little buck such as the 3x3 again and again, because i like to have a full freezer for the year. but i know that i always dream of that monster that would catch everyones eyes, but if i get that now, what will i have to look forward to later on in my hunting carreer?

Beagle...
I' m not sure what your entire post meant. I couldn' t understand half of it. Not sure what you mean about me being from MN in regards to how I think and hunt. You guys have more deer over there in Sconny than we do here. Also, more of the landscape that can hold bigger bucks. But I' m sure you hate that. You should just hunt the T-zone hunt and get all the meat you want from doe. They might not be as yummy as the spikes and forks are. The doe are probably older and wiser. LOL |
RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
i hunt in " sconny" and saw a huge buck last weekend during the t-zone. the buck to doe ratio out where i hunt seems to be about 1 to 1. thats pretty good i plan on trying to get the 9 other guys i hunt with on about 300 acres to not shoot little bucks or yearlings, unless its late in the season. i looked at some pictures lately and saw that most of the deer taken were 6 points or under. i mean just imagine the racks we' d have up there if we didnt shoot the small ones.

GBhunter..
With that ratio and enough nutrition to keep the animals on your tract of land, it wouldn' t take anymore than two years and you would be seein shooters all the time. Good luck to you this season. |

The top 3...absolutely yes, all law abiding, ethical hunters who respect the game they hunt and the land they hunt on. #4 is just a slob who' s intends to break the law in hopes of killing a deer... |
RE: Why do people shoot little bucks?????
I have hunted deer for 40 years, I have killed big mature bucks, little bucks and does, never have and never will shoot a fawn. I have progressed through the years in what deer I will kill, for the first 20 years I hunted if it was legal and brown it was down. Since then I will kill any legal doe I can and any buck with 8 or more points. This is with a gun.
I just started bow hunting and have yet to kill a buck with a bow and I will be honest 4 point or bigger and he is down, once I have that first bow buck under my belt I will return to my 8 point or better buck rule. I will say this though, every one is different and as long as it is legal and makes them happy I don' t care how small of a buck they kill. |
