Deer in the Rain
I am going hunting on Thursday the 30th for the early season doe season in Wisconsin. The forecast is rain the previous night and light rain all day on Thursday with temps in the low 40s. Does anyone have any strategies to bag a doe during these conditions? Should I stay put or stalk quietly?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Deer in the Rain
If you have a well-placed stand where you are confident to see deer you might as well just sit. But when the ground is wet it is also the best time to stalk because it is quiet. Either way would work. Good luck.

RE: Deer in the Rain
Deer can and will move in the rain, but usually they tend to become more inactive than active. I' ve found that if you get a break in the rain, you' ll probably see the deer as they start to move to feed. That' s when you want to be in the stand, like Punt said, if it' s well placed because that' s when you' ll probably have the best chance of seeing anything.
If it' s supposed to rain all day, well...I prefer stand hunting anyhow. Never much liked to stalk. Just my two cents.... Thunder |
RE: Deer in the Rain
i am also hunting the early season in wisconsin where do you hunt? I will be hunting near sobieski on thur and fri, but come sat, ill be in zone 42. anyway, a light rain is the perfect weather for sitting. the deer like to move during the rain because they can move quieter, so i guess if you can stand the rain, get in the game!

I like to just sit tight when it' s raining. I' ve noticed that I see the most activity when the rain stops. I also pack one of the portable umbrellas that goes above my tree stand. Makes the sit easier.

RE: Deer in the Rain
Thanks for all the input guys (maybe gals too)!! GBhunter, I' ll be hunting the early season (Thursday only because of work constraints) near Ladysmith. Mostly I do my regular season hunting near Mt Mckiney (s/p?) I shot a nice fork there last year. However I am not very familiar with the area around Ladysmith and hoping to get lucky and see a doe. I have an area picked out to put my portable stand, so I will give it a try. I' ll let everyone know Friday about my Thursday hunt. Thanks again and do appreciate the suggestions.
