Atlatl Deer Hunting
I've always wanted to learn how to hunt deer using atlatl. Well, I'm finally going to give it a try. I bought a set at the Tulsa gun show and I'm looking forward to practicing until I'm good enough to chuck one at a deer.
Has anyone else tried it? Any tips? |
I have a tip. Make dang well sure it's legal where you intend to use it.

When they were making a push to make using them legal in PA a bunch of them showed up to put on a demonstration. They didn't do themselves any good and the push for legalization failed in PA. There is a reason the bow and arrow became the weapon of choice.

They used to be legal in MT but I don't know if that is still the case.

I'm pretty sure it is legal in Missouri....to make sure check the MDC Site.

Here in SW Pa.there is a historic rock shelter in a park called Meadowcroft Village that puts on demos with them. Some people do pretty doggone good with em

I think the deer would have to be looking away from you to kill one cleanly with the arm motion required to launch it.
It was the preferred weapon to kill mammoth, because they were slow and couldn't jump quick like a deer. Also you needed the additional mass to penetrate on a large beast. |
That and there were a bunch of hunters around the animal throwing the darts so the animal died from an lot of hemorrhages.

I personally can’t support this kind of hunting for the simple reason that it is far more likely to produce wounded deer that cannot be recovered.
