Zeiss Terra line isn't as good as people think.....It's a cost savings scope line. I would say Leupold, or the Nikons, also look into Vortex
|
Night force. I also would not spend a old silver dime on a Leopold scope. Only scope I have ever had to send to the factory for repairs with in a year.
You pay up front for the so called free warranty repairs. :D Al |
You can't really go wrong with most big-name scope brands. That said, I'm more of a Nikon guy, with the occasional Leupold thrown in. So, of the three, I say the Prostaff.

Bushnell No Questions Asked Lifetime Warranty
Fully transferable, covers accidental damage as well as defects in materials & workmanship. No receipt or warranty card is required. We will repair or replace product with equal or similar value and/or specifications. We will return product to you at no charge. http://bushnell.com/Bushnell/media/F...rantySheet.pdf I sent them a Tasco 3x9x40mm World Class scope, and they sent me a new one. The turrent came off when I was zeroing the scope, it was stuck. It was an older World Class scope made by Tasco before they bought them out. So I was sold on them. Buy what you want, I like Bushnell. Just Sayin. |
Leupold 3x9x40 Rifleman matte black.....nice clear optics from low to high setting also check into the Hawkeye Brand scopes!
I have a Nikon Scope on my .22 Hornet and it doesn't do well in low light conditions and isn't clear when set on 9 power further out...the Leupold out performs it,sorry but I prefere them and the cost is reasonable! |
I use Burris (for rifle scopes anyway).
Biggest bang for the buck IMO. |

Bushnell Elite might be OK. Got a buddy that has a few (older models).
The Banners were decent for the $ back in the day, but I saw a lot of them go back when they moved production. Cannot recommend them even for a plinker. Cheapest scope I'd buy would be a Leupold. Have seen cheap scopes work well for many years. Also seen them fail, and do so at higher rate. Hunting time is precious to me, I'm not gonna add risk by trying to save a couple dollars. Yet some folks think taking vac time from work (or lost overtime) and driving a long ways, to run junk guns/scopes/ammo...............and having stuff fail, is worth it. They come into my LGS and buy another cheap replacement and give it a go next week. Sometimes they miss a nice buck running crap, or hit and lose it. But by golly they didn't spend 100 dollars on a scope! It's like they will p*ss away a deer and a ton of time and money..............just to run a cheap gun and or scope. I don't get it. Maybe they have some smarter family members that own 2000 acres they get to hunt on. Maybe they get chances at big bucks multiple times a year. If that's the case..........let them play their silly game however they wish. Hell, they're proly gonna opt for the bead sighted rusty arse H&R break open shotgun anyway (no scope). They have to buy what they can afford. I am not saying that Bushnell is better in any way. For some people that is all they have the $ for. I would love to buy a Leupold, or Nikon, or Zeiss. But I just don't have the extra dollars. Just Sayin. |
Vortex Or Leupold both great have been using the products for years no problem
|
Last year I bought a blemished Leupold VX-1 3X9X40 gloss from Midwayusa for $150, after that Leupold sent me a $50 rebate. Great scope, I can not find the blemish.
|
Of the ones mentioned, I'd probably pick the best of the Nikon's I could get in my price range.

Jenks, that's a good score wish I had that luck tho!
|
Thanks Steve. I like nice hunting gear but I am retired and do not want to spend a fortune on toys. The Leupold will serve my grandson well after I am gone and the warranty will still be good. It is my first Leupold and I am impressed with it. Keep an eye out, they put sales on from time to time.

Been happy with my 20 year old scopes. They're less expensive 3x9 scopes. Never got into sighting in at 700 yards. Seems newer people want to do it differently.
|
Leupold solves all things.
USA. |
Have a Bushnell Elite 3500 now, but will probably buy Vortex next time (whenever that is).
|
The Bushnell Elite 3500 has better eyes than mine at the beginning and end of shooting light! It's also sturdy enough to withstand repeated magnum recoil (used to be on my dad's 7mm Rem Mag). What more can a guy want?
|
leupold vx3, zeiss, maybe nikon...
