Sick Buck 12/28/16

Today I shot this buck at sunset. 80m black powder. When it dropped one antler fell out and while cleaning the other fell out. While cleaning we noticed the other picture. That stuff was on both sides of the belly. The processor had never seen it and said he wouldn't eat it. Tomorrow I'll call fish and game to see if they want it for research. Does anyone know what it is or if any meat is salvageable?

Thanks in advance.

Possibly was hit by car ! is the yuk relegated to the rib area or all over or ? H H

That is one deer that I wouldn't touch with a 10' pole. He looks emaciated laying there in the one picture and the second picture substantiates that something is terribly wrong such that he'd either go for research or in the landfill if it were mine.

Best guess is Cancer.

If it is Prions cleaning your gear can be really important. And almost impossible to do. Steaming and soaking in Chlorine might not get it done.

I've seen something similar at the base of the antlers, but not on the ribs. Usually associated with a castrated Buck, lost his sack on a barbed wire fence or some other accident.

That stuff was isolated to the gut region, separating the stomach from its lining. I did clean a doe this morning with the same knife but of course it was thouroughly washed. I ended up just burying it so as to stop the spread of the disease.

Interesting. Any odor?

No odor to it. My top guess is cancer or infection from a bad shot. CWD doesn't yet have a presence here on the eastern shore of VA that I know of

CWD does not produce that kind of mass, it does its dirty work in the brain.
