Oldtimr,
After reading that story, I'm wondering if shed hunting is allowed in PA?

Yes, sheds can be kept in PA and most other states, but many have laws against keeping dead heads unless you jump through the hoops they have on the books.

As top said, naturally dropped sheds may be picked up and kept, however skulls with antlers or removing the head of a dead deer is not. You may ask why. Because it is pretty clear that sheds are not from an illegally taken deer while antlers on a skull that has been cleaned is not.

"You can't do that," Veylupek said. "Your buck tag is for a deer that you legally harvested. It's not like a coupon you can put on any deer that you find."
HA!!! Tell that to the hundreds of people each year that get their deer jumped on by others!! I saw I don't know how many folks lose deer to someone else because they got to the down deer first. One of the main reasons I absolute detest hunting on State Game Lands in Pa!!

The law says a deer belongs to the person who shot the deer and stopped it in its flight. The law also forbids WCOs from getting involved in disputes regarding the ownership of deer. Yep, there are some unscrupulous people who will tag a deer that someone else killed, it happens but not hundreds of times each year. The thing about hunting is that it is pretty much out of view of the law and the public, there are no referees to thrown a flag and call foul when things happen, that is why it is important for us to obey the law and have a set of ethics about things they will not do even if no one is watching. Unfortunately not everyone out there is ethical.

meh- never eaten antler; how's it taste?

I understand the law, but have never liked it. Nice buck either way. Had the hunter paid the $120 he could have kept it. Oh well.

the states only confiscate big ones, the all time non-typical the Missouri giant, that scored 333 and change was found dead and confiscated by the state of Missouri, also the Hole in the horn from ohio which was #2 was found dead, but it was hanging in a beer joint for 30 years
