White Tail Antler Spread Question
 

Have a quick question for y'all. I'm hunting White Tail in Wilson County, Texas which has an antler restriction. Buck has to have a minimum of 13" inside spread or one unbranched antler. This am, I saw a decent looking buck and it was too close for me to tell but a couple of my buddies are sure it was a shooter. Would like to go back out and put the meat in the freezer but want to get other opinions. So, would you say this has a 13" spread?

That's a dumb rule. Like how are you supposed to know?? I mean if it's close to 13 but not 13 you'd get in trouble. That's bogus. It's not like we have magic rulers in our head telling us what's 13 inches. They should just change it to antler point restrictions. My area has to have ag least 4 points on one side.

Restrictions as you mentioned would be best, at least there is no question about shooter or not. Biggest problem is it helps protect bucks which should be removed from the gene pool. If I have a 10 point with a small spread, I do not want that breeding with does. But if it's an antler restricted county, it gets to and adds more deer which may not be huntable. Straight from Texas Wildlife... "To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck with ears in the "alert" position."

For us here in SoCal, beyond their ears is +/- 18".

yes ,I would judge him about 18. our mulies are generally about 18 if they are ear to ear.
if wrong and he goes twelve just split the skull and widen him out.lol.

I'm in Hardin County and I have experience with the 13inch rule, and South East Texas deer. The answer to your question is yes. He is easily 13 inches.
