Deer Guts %
 

Can anyone tell me what percentage of a deer is his guts. I shot a deer in Ga. last night and the 8 pt dressed at 165 exactly what is his live wt? I have heard 35% but dont know would love some feed back. Tks and Good Huntn
165 x 35% = 222 live wt. very large for Georgia

Trophyhunter, here is a table that was published in the Tennessee wildlife magazine. This table shows the live weight would be about 210 or so.

PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to see a deer that big. That' s a big body for anywhere down South. I got a shot at a 200+ lber about a month ago and blew it. I don' t know how, damn thing looked like a Clydesdale, I think that' s why I messed the shot up.

Anyways formula1 yes i think i shot a deer on social security at shot him at 4:03 pm yesterday and didn' t even get to put tree stand on tree.
Hunted area fairly close Sunday saw a 8 and 9 pt. no rutting signs, went yesterday got to the tree i rifle hunt i will not set foot in this exact area during bow season and it was torn slap to pieces with rubed trees and scrapes. No one on ajoining trophy leases seeing any rutting signs either. Anyways get to my tree on a ride surrounded by planted pines on 3 sides put bottom of stand around tree, see a doe in edge of pines, i reach in fanny pack grab some buck urine spray the side of tree i am next to because wind is swirling didnt want doe to bust me, she walks off i put gun back around my chest lean over to grab hand climber and look to my left and he is standing there starring at me we play the stare down game for five minutes, the whole time looking at him like dang this deer is grown and grey and old looking, he must have finally winded the buck urine spray and stuck his head down and that is where it ended up.
I was right also on my judgement:------ 71/2 yrs old , 8pt scoring 120

I usually estimate that a deers guts are 25-30% of the live weight, which the chart bears out. You will usually get about 40-50% meat from the gutted deer. If your deer dressed at 165, I would guess you will get about 70# of actual meat from that animal.

165# dressed deer.....even for Wisconsin, that would be a very big deer !!!!

35%?? Man, I didn' t think it was that much.

I shot a buck that field dressed 212 a few years ago. That makes him about 260 on the hoof! No WONDER he was so hard to drag out!

Divide the field dressed weight by four, and add that weight to the field dressed weight and you get the estimated live weight.

For your deer, 206.25 (just like the chart said)

Trophyhunter, no hard feelings, you' ll just beat the snot out of us. If the vols don' t start playing better, I' m going to change my board name from rockytop to old baldie or something. [:-]
Anyway, congrats on the deer and I would also like to see a picture.
