therma cells stink
so many mosquito,s had to try the therma cell so I could get out to bow hunt---heard many folks say the do not affect deer in any way well I,ll tell ya I was skeptical but thought that many must be right---HA their all liars I scared so many deer I may not recover at those spots this year !!!! I could smell it so could the deer !!! H H
|
You could easily have fired up the Thermacell BEFORE you got in the woods to check if you could smell it......
|
I havent had any problems yet with any of mine. I keep 2 in my hunting gear/clothes tubs. I have used them for deer and bear hunting. No problems yet.
|
I have used mine for many many yrs, and at times have deer 15-20 plus of them any where from 5-50 yrds DOWN wind of me and NO issue's
YES it has an order to them, but it seems to be one that doesn't effect game I have a LOT of critters here and get all sorts of them to come close to me when I have used mine rather risk, scaring a few critters than donating a pint of blood and swatting at them pesky bugs, way more movement than I wish to be doing while hunting! your call, but I have no issue's with using and killing deer! |
Never seen one deer spook due to the thermacell. I would bet money they smelled or saw you. I have gotten away with some crazy set ups even with the thermacell rolling like a freight train and the deer dead down wind.
|
I use the lantern size in my blind. I can see it smoking and have never had a problem with deer spooking.
|
Love mine. Never hunt Florida without it. Hunt the wind.

Man you HAVE to use something down there in FL. Dang skeeters there have tail numbers and FAA landing clearance!
You ain't kidding bud. Little side note been gator hunting a few evenings/ nights after work and left my therm one evening, but I found a bottle of spray my wife had left in my truck it's the repel 25% deet dry. Normally I HATE sprays due to the oily crap that gets on everything, but this stuff doesn't suck and it did okay at keeping the skeeters at bay. I'm still not a fan of spraying deet on my skin, but it's better then being sucked dry and dying from blood loss! |
An odd smell may spook a Deer, but IMO they smell odd stuff all the time, whether they associate it with danger is an iffy thing.
I occasionally sprinkle a bush with Nuc Mam when hog hunting. Nuc Mam really stinks, almost as bad as Skunk. One of the best trophy Bucks I ever saw was sniffing a bush I'd sprinkled with Nuc Mam for Hogs. |
I just like my sea to summit bug jacket with the mitts. No more missed spots the skeeters find and drive you from the woods and it doesn't stink unless you make stink.
Just make it sized to fit over what you wear hunting. You can put a blaze vest under it and bee seen or over it. :D Al |
If the deer can smell the Thermacell, he is downwind and can smell you, too.

o k guys I appreciate the comments BUT I have hunted same spot for 8 years downwind side of a food plot---only once was winded by deer over the 8 years---when I said I had blowing I mean out to almost 300 yards was ridiculas !
|
well, like they say, ALL deer are different to what they will or WON"T tolerate?
I have never had any issue's in 5-6 states I used mine in, but HEY anything is possible as for bug suits, I have owned a bunch, I will SWEAR by the Bug Tamer PLUS worth every penny and then some I worn mine in swamps where you would have NO lie, 200-500 on you at a time and NEVER get bite once, and be in there for 8+ hrs working can wear them in summer time and NO shirt on under them to stay cool too, and NOT get bite I honestly WISH they made them in white or light blue, as summer time can be nasty HOT in a DARK camo colored jacket/pants BEST darn bug suit made period! |
Nuc Mam, fermented chicken egg? In pepper sauce?
My wife laughs at the guys spraying down with scent killers. She gets up and puts on her make up, does her hair and sprays it, then puts on her cologne. |

My wife laughs at the guys spraying down with scent killers. She gets up and puts on her make up, does her hair and sprays it, then puts on her cologne. I mainly use it in an area where the hogs are crossing, they often stop or slow down to check out where that wonderful aroma is coming from. One place I hunt Hogs has fishermen, fish guts are something they find hard to ignore, free proteen. Hogs often travel from bed to food in a general direction and often don't stick to the trails. Hard to say what will spook a Deer, man scent most always to some degree, they've been hunted by man forever, likely genetic memory. But they can get used to anything over time. Except maybe jumping out in front of headlights, that one seems beyond most of them to adapt to. Joggers and mountain bikers seem to spook the heck out of them, tractors not so much. There is likely some reason for their behavior. I'm not a Deer, darned if I know for sure. |

Are you saying the deer are spooking at 300 yards? I think that anything they smelled from 300 yards away would not spook them. They would be curious as to where it was coming from, but they can't run away every time they are within 300 yards of a curious smell.

I use the earth scent wafers in my Thermicell and it works for me. Great invention!!!
