I got my first deer with....??
a Marlin .44 mag. It was a four point. He came out into a clearing and I hit him three times. My dad was behind me a little bit through the woods watching behind us and I yelled "Dad, it's down!" He came running up probably more excited than I was. So, who else remembers their first and what did you use to get it?

30-30 Marlin. Killed a Pa. 6pt. Buck...:)
3 point Vermont buck in 1963. I was 15 and used a Remington 30-06 model 742. What memories.
Marlin 30-30 in GA with my uncle at 14 years old.
3x3 mulie in CO with my father's old 30-30. He shot his first deer with the same rifle. I was 9 at the time.
Thompson center Hawkins that my Dad built from a kit and a maxi ball that my dad molded.
Rem 870 slug, was a button buck.

After hunting for about four years of hunting, (gun & bow) I shot my first deer, a doe with a Bear Whitetail II at 40 yards! The exact same shot that I had the previous season with even cheaper equipment, and missed low!
First Whitetail was with a TC muzzleloader in Nebraska during a half day hunt while on business.
First all other deer species was with a Remington 721 in .270 Win, that has also accounted for a Wyoming 5x5 mulie that's on my wall. Now it's semi-retired. |
First Deer and only Deer I've ever shot with a bow. They'd closed the county to firearms because of a really high fire danger. Bow hunting Deer way back then was in it's infancy, very few bow hunters around. I used an aluminum re-curve bow I'd made from a kit. I practiced hunting crows.
It was mostly luck , I'd followed some fresh scuff marks up a hill away from a trickle of water in a canyon, into some fairly thick Chaparral and caught a young Buck (California Mule, 18 months old) sleeping. I missed my first shot low and the dummy just laid there looking at the arrow, didn't miss the second shot. I had some trouble tracking him in the brush but eventually found him. I remember it was around 10-11 in the morning when I found him, southern California hot and almost unbearable in that brush. Even hotter getting that Deer out of there, impossible to stand up straight in the brush. I Dragged that Deer maybe a quarter of a mile, mostly on my hands and knees, it seemed a lot farther. |
