Cabela' s sells some great long john suits that will keep you pretty warm. They have them made of different materials and with different warmth ratings depending on what region you live in. I agree that cotton doesn' t do too much for extream cold days and nights. I hope this helps!! -- CDH

Polyproplene is by far the warmest and lightest material to wear against the body. I then wear a fleece shirt and pants outfit from columbia to help seal heat in and keep wind/cold out. Both these materials when wet are warm and dry very quickly.

Wool is warmest but is itchy. And even though it stays warm when wet, if you stop and cool down it will feel clammy. Polyproplene is the best I' ve found, I use Thermax. It has superior wicking properties also to keep you dry. Cotton as the first layer will become cold when wet, but if you then use a layer of Thermax it will wick the moisture out.

I totally agree with skeeter. It does a great job of wicking moisture away from your body. I also were fleece as my next layer. Its a great combo with the Polypro. Cabelas has a great fleece jacket that is light enough to wear under the rest of my camo.
