Check out Helly Hanson. I used them on the oil rigs in north can. Expensive but WELL worth the money. Light and breathable. minus40 with HH glove liners and rubber gloves no problem, wicks moisture away from your skin.;);)

You are on the right track. Think wicking, not warmth when buying longjohns. Your outer layers are for warmth. The best I have found are patagonias capilene, from REI. Great wicking and very comfortable. Had some Thermastats, but they seem to itch more.

I have to go with polypropylene myself.Add a layer of fleece and add a goretex windbreaker and you are ready for wind ,rain or snow.
