Is this tree rub from a deer?
I found one of the largest tree rubs I have ever found but is it from a deer or bear? The reason I ask is because it is near a line of rubs but all the other rub are on trees 1/3rd the size.

Well, a picture would kind of be a little bit needed to be able to tell you :confused0024:
Okay you added pic, thanks. Now, that may or may not be a rub from a big boy. It LOOKS like it could be marked up from brow tines. Bear markings tend to be slanted rather than straight up and down as well as they tend to be higher up on the tree. |
Keep an eye on that area. Could be a real big boy. Looks like a rub to me...the type I see in the mid west.

Cougars and bobcats mark trees as well, not often, have also seen black bear markings in the up and down direction but all three are generally rough and shredded in their markings. Since the outer section of the damage looks smoother so I am also led to believe could be a big buck.

Unless you have a rhinoceros in your woods, I vote buck. No claw marks.
|
Certainly could be but you cant gauge the size of the buck by the size of the tree. I one saw a for take on a tree as big around as a 5 gallon bucket.
|
Looks like he dug his brow tine in it.

Agree, looks more like a deer has been active, would like to see that one in action. Good luck, hope you get the opportunity.
