The group I hunt with does not put out loose feed as a rule. We did put out some at the instruction of a state game management biologist to help get an estimate of what was roaming around on or near where we hunt. It was just enough to get the deer in front of game cameras and then it was gone ... in about 2-3 days .... maybe 10# or so of corn in front of each camera. The biologist strongly recommended we not feed corn. Same information as presented by Oldtimr.

Instead we go the route of year round food plots and fertilizing some of the areas that have recently been contol burned. We cannot afford to fertilize it all !! The land owner's forester manages the thinning of the pines and control burn schedule. The areas that were thinned last fall and winter (about 600 acres) and this spring (about 300 acres) are covered with new underbrush. Vines, saplings, and oll sorts of green stuff most of which I could not identify if my life depended upon it. The deer are absolutely hammering this stuff. Looks like someone goes through that 900 +/- acres regularly with a mower set about a foot off the ground. About all that goes untouched are the sweet gum saplings.

The 20 or so acres of food plots we are managing for the summer are all being used heavily as well. We did plant about 1 acre in "Red Hemp". So far that field has been a flop. Not sure why.
