Staining some antlers

This old guy was in rough shape. Skinny and just not doing well. I watched him from my stand one evening all evening and came back the next morning to hunt and he was still there and didn't seem to have much hope so I went ahead and tagged him.

Anyway that has been about 7-8 years ago and he has been hanging on the shed every since and for some reason I just decided to stain his antlers today and it actually turned out pretty good.(I was already started when I decided to take pictures)

I thought some might be interested in the results. I just used some old wood stain I had laying around.

Geez, that worked out pretty well if the color stays that way! Good you took the old guy out, as it doesn't sound like he would have made it through that upcoming winter.

Still looks good this morning. I don't think he would have made it through the winter. He really just looked and acted defeated and I'm guessing by his antler growth he had not been doing real well for awhile.

Looks real good!! I have used clear spray on paint to preserve antlers that I had mounted on a board. They still look like the day I killed the buck, some are many years old.

Wow man I'm impressed! Antler staining can be real hit & miss, looks like you know what your doing!

Looks good Rock! I use the dark Old English furniture polish, it works good too!

X2 on the Old English stain. Do it it layers until you get the color you like.

nice job! You can always re-stain if it fades again...

Looks like a good job. Ever try brown shoe polish? It works.

I found a pair of sheds and had them restored but they don't look as well as yours came out. A pic of mine are in my album.
