Morning, Evening or All Day?
When you go out hunting, do you usually go out just in the morning, just in the afternoon / evening or go out from pre sun up to post sun down?
I would say that I go out all day about 40% of the time, 50% of the time it is just the morning and maybe 10% of the time in the evening only. I have been reading some opinions that say in the later season it is much better to be out in the afternoon than the morning. I may try that, but I fear getting a deer 10 minutes before it is too dark to see to shoot and having to track in the dark, then clean and get the deer out of there. I live 1.5 hours from my hunting spot, it would be midnight before I got home. Plus, what do you do about a check station if you get out of the woods at 6:30 or 7:00pm and the station closed at 5:00? On a Saturday night? Would I have to wait until Monday to go get it checked in? Chubber |
RE: Morning, Evening or All Day?
For me it depends on the time of the season and the moon. Right now I mostly hunt evenings around food sources like oak ridges and food plots. Closer to the rut Ill hunt both morning and evening unless the moon is full then Ill hunt some around midday. During the rut I try my best to hunt all day because you never know when a buck will walk by. The last part of season I try to hunt both mornings and evenings, but probably have better luck in the evening, but really late like right at dark.

RE: Morning, Evening or All Day?
Depends on my work. How busy I am, do I have time to make it worth while. If I have someone do chores I will hunt all day. but mostly am and pm hunts.

I rather all day hunts. Get in early and stay till last light. Works great with you odds in a good area. But... there are time when I do split my hunting day. |
RE: Morning, Evening or All Day?
Use a scoped rifle and sit on stand dawn to about 11:00 then still hunt with the lever till about 2:30-3:00 and then back on stand with the scope till dusk. Have an advantage that i hunt private land and stay at a cabin on site. The one day/half day hunts waking up at 2:30 in the morning and then hunting all day or just part of it and getting home late at night to get back to work the next day are over. No fun and not relaxing, not even mentioning the complaints I had to deal with at home. Less time hunting but more quality hunting is the the ticket. Wife and work now know my schedule, I will only deer hunt five full days a year now, one three day on the opener and one weekend, but they are quality days devoted to hunting and relaxing. I' ve sort of convinced her that I only deer hunt twice a year so complaints are kept to a minimum. God bless her though, she puts up with fall fishing season and loves joining me in the spring for trout.

RE: Morning, Evening or All Day?
Early in the year i hunt more evenings then anything else. As prerut hits I spend a lot of afternoons and evenings out when possible. Then come rut I hunt all day long. In any event hunt when you can the more you are out the better the odds are at connecting. I know guys who hunt the mornings only till rut and then all dayer' s...we do equally well in sightings and harvests. Just different scheduling that makes what time is best for us to go out;)
