she snorted at me now what?
Sunday night I noticed deer eating in a alfalfa field. Well i fianlly got the chance to hunt this field tonight. I know that they would be out about 6:00 615 which only gives me about 30 mintues of good hunting. The wind was blowing away from the field. So I hid in a brush pile along the edge of the field. The deer came out about 5:50. They were out there for a good 20 mintues or so. Until the wind changed direction on me. I saw one of the deer look my way. Just then she snorted at me and they all took off. I have two questions about this little story. Will they be back in the next few nights to feed? I try to be scent free how did she pick my scent up? Have you ever been snorted at for being winded? Lastly what should have I done differently?

chances are that you just weren' t " right" for the bush. I had this happen on Tuesday night this past week, herd of 9 deer the lead doe snorted they all took off.
I took my gear save for my bow out to the edge of the field my partner and I walk out at the end of the hunt and low and behold half the herd was back all of a half hour later; one of the herd assumed room temperature thanks to a well placed Muzzy 4 Blade.
ANswer the deer will be back. Make sure that your face and hands are camoed, don' t be in the sun when you are in the bushes-it will highlight you against the foilage, and if you have one use a scent containment suit. If not use a cover scent for the area and a carbon spray.

It is neat the way Deer make different sounds to alert others of danger. They will also trot rather than run to warn others of danger in the area. I have used different deer calls through the year to watch the deer react to the different grunts or squeels I make..you learn a lot by watching through the summer months. They are however curious animals and most of the time come back to see what spooked them.

You can never eliminate all human scent. But they smelled you because you were entering the field from the wrong direction and the wind wasn' t in your favor. They' ll be back, but will be more wary. Make sure you don' t come from the same direction again because they will be watching the most closely there.
Good Luck!
