new slug gun passes the first test..
 

Over the summer I built a DSG [dedicated slug gun] I started with a Mossberg 500 the bought a ported rifled slug barrel and pinned it to the receiver did a little trigger work, then topped it off with 3x9x40 Simmons ATEC.. On the range I am getting 2" groups at 200 yards sighted 2" high at 100 it hits about 4'' low at 200..

I am shooting Hornady 300gr sst slugs.

Saturday evening I shot a doe at 100 yards pinned the front shoulders and basically turned her heart and lungs into runny jelly.

We don't have to hunt with slug guns in GA I just have always liked them so decided to build a shotgun exclusively for shooting slugs..

it's not bad to shoot either thumps you a little but not unmanageable. I had a single shot 45/70 that kicked harder if you used the Hornady lever evo ammo... It's probably in the range of a 270, the porting helps alot, that and the fact it is fairly heavy..

Isn't it amazing how effective a slug can be? My designated slug gun is an HR Ultra-light topped with a 4x Nikon. It really likes the Win 3" shells with a saboted 50 cal bullet. Nothing I have hit with it has walked away.

I like the slug guns and regret selling mine. 2" @ 200 is outstanding. Great to hear of an SST performing so well on a deer as you sometimes hear of them not expanding or leaving a blood trail. Thanks for the report.

Uncle Norby…I believe you have the Marlin Slugmaster, right? I needed money for a Summit Viper a few years ago since I lost the one piece of private land I could hunt and though my life was safer in a tree than on the ground on public land!

There's just something satisfying about hurling the largest hunk of lead you can down range and watching the results.

The results are…a bigger hole in the paper. Seriously, I don't know many that enjoy shooting a 12ga slug gun. When I had mine, I'd zero it and then crack out the 308. Much more satisfying IMO…with much less pain! :D

Pinning involves drilling a hole through the side of the receiver and the shank of the barrel, then using a machine screw to hold the receiver and barrel together. You can also use a roll pin...

it's really not that bad.....the good thing is it only took 6 shots to get it zero'ed..
