So is there a way of calling too much and 'spooking' the deer?

Figuring out what is going to work can best be determined by spending a lot of time in the woods, listening. When do you notice deer grunting? How loud do they grunt? What type of sequence do they use? Mimic what you hear live deer doing, when they do it, how they do it. Anything that sounds un-natural is going to make them wary.

Brushy Pines, yes I think you could call too much and spook a deer. like I stated if you call one grunt after another after another like a box turkey call unless that buck is in full rut chasing everything he hears or see's you could spook him. IF I see a buck and he is not coming my way I will play him like a big gobbler in spring time. I will softly grunt to him and watch his reaction. If he gives any sign of he will keep coming, I let him come until he holds up on me then I will give him another soft grunt turning my head away from him making him think the deer he is looking for is a little further away then what he thought. deer like turkeys know exactly where a call is coming from but, can be fooled into thinking the other deer may have moved further away. If the deer's reaction becomes negative for any reason I shut up and let him come looking for the call. I have killed many a gobbler this way and deer can be played the same way. I will admit a deer can be in full rut and you can call to him, yell at him, and he will not stop or pay any attention to you or the call he only wants to smell a doe in estrous or already has. grunting to a buck deer is not a science it is just a matter of what mood or how much calling has been used on him if he responds or not.
