Check out this Florida buck....

I live & hunt just a few miles below the Ga line. Most folks think of Florida & picture flat pine forests & sandy beaches. Our region around the Panhandle is more like South Ga than Fl.

We have managed our family farm for about 4 years & are beginning to see good results. When we first got the place, you were hard pressed to see a spike, much less a good buck. We had a renegade hunting club across the road that dropped anything that moved. The lease was St Joe' s land & bought by an individual who is more a bird hunter than deer, but he has a few family members & guests that are only permitted to take does. And, they must take 2 does before they are permitted to even hunt for a buck. This has helped us a great deal.

The buck below was harvested last fall on the Friday aftet Tgiving day. Our gun season opens Tgiving day. He took him just barely before dark which proves he was nocturnal and the season had barely begun. By Fl standards, he was a good buck, very thick rack, and heavy. Guestimated age was 5 and a half.

Nice looking rack, I have to say it amazes me the difference in size of deer, living in Va. it seems as though we have medium sized deer, the further south the smaller, the further north the larger. I know this doesn' t hold 100%, in Va. most mountain deer are small in comparison to those in the piedmont region where there is a lot of agricultural stuff, and I am sure that holds true in most states where the deer vary in size drastically depending upon where they are.

That buck has some nice mass, especially for a Florida deer. Glad to hear that you' re reaping the rewards of your deer management! Thanks for posting the pic!

Actually that is a biological fact in regards to mammals. The further north of the equater you go the larger the animals (the colder the bigger). Part of nature' s way of forcing the fat animals to survive the cold and in the south you have to be thin to beat the heat. Kind of the same way with the different races of humans, the people that are native to the warmer climates are generally smaller and the folks from the north tend to be larger.

nice buck.

I will agree on the bigger deer the farther north you go but not in humans. If that were the case I am 6' 1 to 240 lbs..... I hope I never move to the North I would weigh over 300 lbs.....LOL
