Hunting with a 30/30 Winchester
#11

I killed my first gun buck with a 30-30 with a shot at 10 yards right between the eyes. We were both on the ground starring each other down. Shot a doe with it at over 100 yards right in the eye. I could not find a hole in the deer. I never thought to look at the eye. A 30-30 has killed many many deer and will do you just fine.

I have a Marlin 336. Just love the gun. Light, short, and easy to carry. Most all shots are 120 yds or less in our area, usually a lot less. Never lost a deer although once I shot under a buck that was farther away than I realized. I like the lever action side ejection of the Marlin 336 too.

Not a 30-30 but a 32 Winchester special bought in the early 1930 by an uncle. I don't think that thing had a lick of bluing left on it when I first saw it in the mid 1970's. Uncles eyes had gotten so bad he mounted a pistol scope on a home made ring set up out on the barrel where the dove tail usually sits.
Believe it or not that scope was pretty clear and stable plus no problem with the top eject.

Mine is a 1960 '94 with a Lyman peep sight. I shoot left handed so I like the ejected case to go over my head like the origionals did. It is accurate but I try to keep shots within 100 yards and I aim for the lungs. I usually have it in a gun case on the front rack of a ATV when I am deer hunting, it is easy to get out and fast to use. Not a long range or powerful caliber, but will do the job with good hits at reasonable distance. Have fun with it, it is a great old caliber.

I have several Hunting Friends that Deer Hunt with the 30-30 Caliber....it's 1 Rifle that I have never shot or owned but would Love to have .If I was to get a 30-30 one day I would put a nice Leupold Rifleman Scope on it and use the new Hornady Lever-Revolution bullets that reach out and touch those Deer!

The ol turty turty ain't pretty & ain't flashy but there's probably been more game killed with it in the USA than just about all the rest combined (maybe take the 30-06 out of that equation, tons taken with it as well). But anyway, if you want to use that turty turty for ANYTHING that happens to jump up in your path, then consider these 190grn loads from Buffalo Bore!

They pretty much maximize the potential of power & penetration capable in the ol warhorse!

Aint so, UncleNorby. My grandson shot a nine pointer on the run year before last with a '94 Winchester in 30-30 that I had given to his dad when he was a kid. This was his first, he hit it in the lower sholder, it only went a few feet and plowed into a bush and died. Granted, the deer was only about 50 feet from him when he shot. No upgraded ammo, this was Federal ammo, don't recall if it was the 150 or 170 grain bullet. The old 30-30 will do the job with good shot placement at reasonable range.
