New to hunting.

This coming up hunting season will be my first season hunting. I will be hunting on the Gulf Coast of Florida. I was wondering what the best times of the day to hunt are? I also purchased and feeder and was wondering what the best feed to use is or would a mixture better.

My 10 year old son will also be hunting with me. We are making it a family thing. What would be a good entry level gun, caliber, and scope for him to hunt deer. I have been told that a .270 is the best gun for an entry level hunter to start with. I myself use a .308

I'll second that! The .270 maybe a little too stout for a younger shooter. The .243, with good 100 gr. bullets will take down just about any whitetail on the planet.

.270 probably has similar recoil to your .308. Might be a bit much for a 10 year old. .243 or a 7-08 might be a better choice.

.270 would be fine...just get a buttstock pad if its too much...

Mornings and evenings are best times to see deer but they can be there anytime. typically you have to get there 1.5-2hr prior to sunrise and sunset IMO.

Good ol'e corn works if its allowed in your state which it sounds like it is...plus you might see hogs down there in FL...

Good luck!

Check Your local and State Game Laws to see what Calibers are allowed for Deer Hunting in Florida.I've read that the Deer are much smaller there so You may be able to use a .223 which would have lighter recoil for a Younger Hunter, the next size Caliber I highly reccomend would be the .243 that several others mentioned also.

For a good quality and reasonably priced Rifle I would look into the Savage Axis Youth Rifles with the scope package, plus they have the newer models this year that have the Accu-Trigger so for a little more money You can get a better trigger that's adjustable. They have the plain Black Synthetic Axis, the XP Camo and the Cool looking Pink/Black Camo Muddy Girl Rifle also!

Hunt all the day lite hours you can. If you ain't out there ya ain't going to see them.

243, 6mm Remington, 260, 250/3000, really just about any 6mm, 6.5 mm or 7mm works and has lighter recoil.

:D Al

Thanks for all the info. I have been looking at the Savage Arms .243. My son like how the feel when he holds them and the youth model is the perfect length for him. I truly appreciate all info.
