cut cedars 2/3s the way through lay them down without cutting them totally off, they will live 2-3 years like that, provide food for deer and cover for rabbits and other small game, deer like corn but it isn't really good for them, its mostly fat, its harder for them to break down fat into energy than it is protein, feed them higher protein foods, like barley and buckwheat

If you are going to plant these, plan on protecting them until the get fairly high - otherwise the deer will mow them down! Deer love these cedar almost more than anything for winter browse. What Ridgerunner proposes is for trees that you plan to sacrifice for feeding the deer in a hard winter like this.
