I was hunting from a tripod stand that rotates 360 degrees. It was the night before daylight savings. I got in the stand at 3:00. I was actually overlooking a corn pile with my back to where he eventually came out. The stand was placed on a hill next to a huge creek. I watched several small bucks and does run around and play from about 4:00 - 5:00. Every now and then I'd slowly rotate the stand around to see if I saw anything. I often do a lot of praying while I'm in the stand. At about 6:15 I just happened to look over my right shoulder and saw a big doe about 60yds away coming out of the woods across the creek. Not far behind her was the buck. I started shaking like a leaf. I was fortunate in that there was a patch of dog fennel which he had to pass through before I shot him. Otherwise, I'd have taken a left handed shot. As he went through the dog fennel I wheeled the tripod almost 180 degrees. He was almost directly behind me now. As soon as I got set he came out of the dog fennel broadside. I hit him right in the shoulder with my Ruger .270 fitted with a Redfield 3x9x52 Revenge scope. The 130 grain Federal Fusion ammo did its job as he buckled, limped about 10 yards and did a face plant in the soft dirt. I kicked in another shell and watched him twitch for a few seconds. But, that was all she wrote. He was dead. There was hardly any blood. The bullet did very little damage. I actually shot him about 3 inches too far into his shoulder. I was aiming for just behind the shoulder, but my nerves got the best of me. Oh yeah, my brother in law had just moved that stand there about and hour before I sat in it. A big thanks goes to him.
