Good starter deer gun for my son?

The one that fits the best.
There really isn't a bad gun for a beginner.
What does your state require for shotgun gauge or minimum rifle caliber?
These need to be answered before we can give a good response.

Savage 220f youth model and the 2nd best option is not even close IMO.

Then its time to think about options and versatility. Do you want to be able to use it for other things? Duck hunting? Small game? just deer?
The Savage 220F is a fantastic gun, if your only interested in deer hunting. The Remington and Mossberg combos are the next best thing. They give the option of not having to buy a second gun to do anything.
