Good starter deer gun for my son?
I want to get some ideas of what a good first deer gun for my son would be
|
The one that fits the best.
There really isn't a bad gun for a beginner. What does your state require for shotgun gauge or minimum rifle caliber? These need to be answered before we can give a good response. |
We can't use rifles in our area but the minimum is .410 for shotguns
|
Start with a 20 gauge, with a rifled barrel and a cantilevered scope mount (if legal).
Remington has these combos, as does Mossberg, and several other companies. |

Savage 220f youth model and the 2nd best option is not even close IMO. |
How old is he?
20ga with slug is plenty to take a deer... 12ga when hes older and can handle the gun. |
He is 12. Most kids start out with 20 gauges where I come from so it's not a bad idea
|
Then its time to think about options and versatility. Do you want to be able to use it for other things? Duck hunting? Small game? just deer?
The Savage 220F is a fantastic gun, if your only interested in deer hunting. The Remington and Mossberg combos are the next best thing. They give the option of not having to buy a second gun to do anything. |
We mainly hunt deer
|
Occasionally we will go small game hunting but he uses a .22 for that
