Good starter deer gun for my son?

My son has a 20 gauge Rem. 870 Wingmaster (handed down to him from me), but uses my Marlin 336 in 30-30 to deer hunt. My BIL found a nice JM stamped 336 and my son will get it for Christmas after I re-finish the stock (metal is in great shape). He is 13 but over 6' tall so he doesn't have any problems with the 30-30.
