Snack in the Stand

Does anyone take a snack with them to the stand and if they do what is it? or maybe even a bottle of water?

I' ve always got water with me anytime I' m out hunting. Occasionally I will take a snack like grapes, rasins, or sometimes beef jerky. Most of the time I don' t take anything to eat.

I always carry two sandwiches, some jerky, apples, and a few candy bars. Also a bottle of water. I don' t hunt from treestands, I alternate between tracking/still-hunting and sitting in makeshift ground blinds. Being out in the cold fresh air and walking as much as I do sure makes me hungry. I take my candy bars out of the wrapper and keep them all in a small tupperware container, so i don' t have to worry about the noisy wrappers. I' ve never had deer spook (that I know of) while I was eating. On occasion I' ve had deer walk up on me while I was eating a sandwich.

Forgot to mention that I stay right out in the woods all day and never come out to eat lunch. If I didn' t take any food I' d be awfully hungry and worn out by the end of the day.

During Bow and ML season I do a lot of morning or evening hunts, on these occasion I only take a bottle of water with me. On the days I spend in the field some I will pack my lunch others I will eat in the truck for some R&R. Whatever the case I always eat the same grub: PBJ Sandies, Cereal or granola bars, fruit (apple, bananna or pears), possibly some trail mix and H20. I take a milk jug or 2 with me and always make sure I have a small bottle in my pack. I should mention I start out every hunt with 2 packages of oatmeal, Large glass of milk, bannana and apple for the road.

If I' m sitting in the stand for the last two or three hours of daylight, I just take some water or gatorade. If I am hunting in the morning for two or three hours the same thing. If I am planning on hunting all day, I take a couple of water bottles of ice tea and some tuna sandwhiches etc... :D -- CDH

PB-n-J sandwiches...but put peanut butter on both pieces of bread and jelly in the middle or you will end up with a baggie full of pb-n-j mush.

I' ve noticed that no one has mentioned anything about taking coffee out with them? Is this a deer hunting no-no that I' m not aware of?

On cold mornings (almost always) I take a thermos of coffee. I have heard the arguments against, but it sure knocks the chill off. When my younger son goes with me, I take hot chocolate for him. Other than seeing deer, the hot chocolate is the highlight of his morning.

I' ve often wondered if the smell of coffee is enough to spook deer. I suppose a safe alternative to coffee would be to heat up some plain water and put it in a thermos. The only thing lacking would be the caffeine. I' m not sure if could give that up.

I usually do not bring any snack into the wods while hunting, that is with the exception of tootsie-pops. Yep, I would feel lost wthout them. Outside of that, I do occasionally get hungry but never that much that would alter my routine. I always try to make it a plan of action to stay in the woods (self-climber) all day, dark ' til dark. If I come out, it' s because I' m helping one of my buddies (or myself) do a little draggin' .

my snacks of choice would have to be beef or deer jerky and peanuts. With some water to wash it down.

The night before hunting, I like to load up on some carbs much track athletes do for lots of energy. On the day of the hunt, might pack some more energy bars. These are great for days you foresee a lot of hiking.

I guess the older and fatter I get the more food I want to have with me, hmmmm believe I am seeing a pattern here...

Anyway, I " go light" during bowseasons as much to keep movement down as anything else. I ALWAYS have a bottle of water in my pack and typically some of those lil candy bars you can buy a sack of at the grocery store, a pack of gum and something like King Dongs, pop tarts, granola bars etc... I simply remove them from their noisy plastic/foil wrappers and place in a papertowel in a ziploc bag.

During many gunhunts (and bowhunts that occur in the rut) where I might stay from dawn till dusk, I " go loaded for bear" . Sandwiches, drinks, snacks etc. I' ve even done the " Wensel Brothers" lunch where I took a hot thermos of water that had a couple of cooked hotdogs in it, grabbed a couple pieces of bread out of a ziploc bag, slathered on some ketchup/mustard from fastfood packets and WHALLA! an instant hot meal 20' in a tree. If you think ballparks are great at the game, you should see how AWESOME they are to a hungry gut out in the middle of the woods. You just gotta eat S L O W L Y and watch the movement if you arent in a very concealed stand/blind.

Now excuse me while I head for the frige,
RA

I must admit I like my coffee and When one of my kids is along I too take Hot Chock. for them. But when It is very cold I take hot soup in the thermos instead of coffee. It warms me and gives energy better than coffee.

I like sandwiches and granola to snack on.
