GPS app
any good droid apps, that will follow me into the woods, and get me out ? Something that I can drop a pin at the trail head... and a few pins along the way.

In my experience with GPS apps for phones, they work OK as long as you are in range for a cell signal. After that they are dead.
I use one for highway driving but for back country travel I rely on my Garmin. |
Google is your friend, Learn it, love it, Use it!

No shoes... No shirt..... NO DICE
Learn it, know it, live it. |
Google is good to aerial scout the areas you are looking to go into. Figure out land terrain features and all or even print and take with you just in case.
Bull camps advice is spot on. Service areas depend with providers and I have used the android app on my phone in urban areas and had to wait ten minutes just for the signal to find my relative area. Get a handheld gps unit designed for that purpose, or if you want I hear the international satellite phones they have out now have much better gps systems built in but plans and phones are expensive. |
Google maps is the best "cell phone" app I use for gps. Car or woods. Its vey accurate provide you have signal.

"BackCountry Navigator" for android works great!
