Confused on ridges

Walk the sunny side of the ridge without silhouetting yourself.
Stop in the shade of the "bush/cover" on your side of the valley/"cut".
Glass the opposite hillside that should be still throwing shade and look for animals transition to their bedding areas.

I like to watch the saddles and the point where a ridge drops off on to a flat area. If a traveling buck is going perpendicular to the ridge he is likely to cross in a saddle. If he is going right down the ridge he will likely get funneled to the point when he hits the flat area.
And don't skylight yourself by moving along the crest of a ridge. Stay part way down one side.
