Anyone deer hunt with a .308 Rifle?
 

I just recently started using an old .308, I have 150gr and 180gr ammo for it. I hunt NY where the furthest shot I have is MAYBE 125 yards. What would you guys recommend and how do you like this caliber for deer?

It's deadly. Any .30 cal round is more than enough gun for deer and depending on the type(ballistic tip or rapid expansion types), the internal damage and exit wounds are catastrophic.

Have no worries, the 308 is more than capable if not a little bit overkill. ;)

125 yards with a 308 is a bit of a waste,it'll shoot a lot further,but enough for deer.

I have an AR10 (which is a 308 version of the AR15's) and its a cannon.. Kind of over-kill for a deer..
With that much energy, you don't even need to hit a vital to kill the animal. The shock-wave that is created as the round passes through the tissues is enough.

I think the Winchester boxed ammo I have says zero drop at 200yds so yeah its moving...its plenty gun for a deer

In my opinion, its the best rifle for a deer. Equip it with ballistic tip ammo and its a magic wand of death.

The 30/30, 270, 308 and 30/06 are (and have been) the best basic deer cartridges for years and years!

My favorite caliber! My rifle seems to like the 150 gr. Remington Core Locts better than anything else. I just started reloading, but I have not found a good load yet!

My Uncle that I grew up hunting with probably killed more deer with a .308 than anyone I ever met. I'd bet that after the 30-06 and 30-30, the .308 has accounted for more whitetails than any other cartridge.

When I show up in camp with a .308 the word gets around fast and deer just walk into camp and surrender. They know the futility of resistance.
