Completely NEW!

Ok guys, I've come here to learn! I am new to the game of hunting, I have rifles but unfortunately I cannot use them in mass. I am however incredibly interested in getting started for next falls deer hunt!

I need some tips on scouting, areas and what to look for! I am also in need of which things I should start to acquire and essentials for me to have a good hunt! I plan on using a blind with shotgun and maybe a possibility of muzzle load. Thanks again! ~Nick

Welcome to hunting. In terms of what to acquire, keep it simple, there's a lot of companies out there pimping their stuff as the latest and greatest, but most of it you really don't need. That's just general advice. If you have specific questions about gear (or anything else), ask.

Kind of weird you cannot use your rifles in Mass? You got a criminal record or something? My step dad lived in mass before he moved here, and he could use rifles there in Mass!

I'm in Michigan and I'm surrounded by cornfields and dirt roads.. Homes in my area average 5 to 10 acres each.

We can shoot anything we want if we are target practicing.. I fire my AR10 (308 cal) frequently.

But, for hunting, we are limited to muzzle loaders and shotguns.. Center-fire rounds travel too far and there are far too many idiots so they banned them.
Now, go about an hour north of me and you can use anything you want... There is a literal line (highway) that divides us.

No its a mix of anti gun and heavy populated areas, I have my license to carry with no limitations which is very hard to get.

In Michigan you can also use straight wall pistol rounds in a pistol to hunt the shot gun zones too. No contenders with rifle rounds like 30-30 allowed.

Learn the white tail deer thru your local libaray or do a goggle search on the net and learn about them Once you learn the critter learn the hunting area the rest is easy.

How to hunt the area can be learned at the local sportsman club listing to old timers talk of their hunts and how they did it.

Keeping it simple is correct. wash and hang hunting clothing well away from the homes scents. I have a 10x10 shed in the back yard just for dressing in hunting clothing and the boots.
I carry a small knife for field dressing.
a camera to take pictures of critters I am not hunting.
A 10"x10" about freezer bag to put the heart in and also as a means to keep the wet wipes, paper towel sheets and bit of TP in. I carry a couple sandwiches in it also. I carry a 2 quart thermos of tea I sip on thru the day. A drag rope is duck taped to the thermos as a carry strap till I need the drag rope 1/4 inch size.
If I am still hunting I carry a set of pruning shears and a folding pruning saw and a coil of small twine in case I want to throw up a tempory blind in a likely place.
