RE: Putting out corn!!!
First off, check with the local Game Warden to make sure this is a legal. We put some out in our area this weekend, 200-300 yards from where we' re hunting (this is legal here.. as long as you can' t see it) Shelled is best... and dont put it in piles because it will mold... spread it on the ground. Hope this helps,

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Off season I have put out corn with a PVC pipe, 4" X4ft. (Illegal to bait in MS). I would tie the tube to a tree, put a stick under the bottom so it will feed out. I cut part of the top of a Clorox type jug and place it over the top of the tube. Keeps the moisture out, will last about 2-4 days. Deer will paw it out and haven' t had any mold. Feb 1 is when I start feeding and that is when food is scarce here.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Good question, Russ gave a good suggestion. I also before season would put corn Kernals (dried) in a used 7-up bottle, being it' s green.
Any way the deer loved it, they would kick the 2ltr jug around to get the corn out. deer would relate to the bottle even if there was nothing in it. Edited section: I do believe that deer should be taken through fair chase. And do not toss green 7-up 1ltrs around just to have trained deer come through looking for corn. The preseason goodies really works good for the very first part of the season. Like a bounus. However, most offten than any, I am a very natrual hunter and rely on good knowledge and the wind. Good luck |
RE: Putting out corn!!!
Bigdawg, if you have several deer in your area it don' t make much difference, just put it in a spot to where they can find it and it will be gone. I dumped a bag out last Wed, afternoon in a new spot and put a camera on it and got a roll of pictures in 2 nights, I checked it again today, had another roll taken up and the corn is gone.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Man, I hate to say it, but for your first post, you just opened a can of worms. I don' t have a problem with putting out corn, because it is legal here in NC. I put out corn from Febuary till October. Just until the acorns begin to fall good.
However, in many states it is illegal and many hunters think it is unfair and unethical. But, as long as your state says it' s ok, the best way is through a feeder or by spreading it. Hope this helped. By the way, don' t take other peoples opinions personaly. That is all they are. Opinions. |
RE: Putting out corn!!!
hey bo the best way to put corn out is shelled corn spread out on the ground about 20 yards all around your tree spread out... DONT PILE IT UP b/c it will mold and the deer wont eat it that well out of a pile... theyd rather graze and eat it off the ground... try this and let us know how it works... this is how we all do it .... if you use corn on the cob... the deer can carry it away from the stand and eat it in the woods somewhere else. good luck this season!

RE: Putting out corn!!!
I have used corn both ways on the cob and shelled. They both work well, I have never had a problem w/deer carrying the cobs off. In my area the deer eat the corn so fast that mold isn' t an issue, but if it was I have a cheap and easy solution. Go and buy a 35 gal. rubbermaid trashcan and cut 4 or 5 1" triangles at the bottom. Put it out where you want it, fill it up, and tie the lid down. If you don' t tie the lid, coons and deer will knock it off. Has worked for me the last 4 years and it is easier and cheaper than all the other feeders. It holds about 200-300 lbs. of shelled corn.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
I use a Moultrie feeder (from $19.00 to $29.00) depends on where you get them, and a metal garbage can.hang it from a large limb.it will last fo a Mo,if you fill it full.if you fill it full, you will need a pulley and a boat wench to pull it up.I have 10 of them on my hunting area.there are a lot of different ones on the market, lots of $$$$$$$$$,the Moultrie are the least expenceive and works great for me.
I run them year round, except durning gobbler season(you can' t hunt near them,so we stop so no one will get in trouble.)start them up the monday after gobbler season ends. that is the easiest way to do it.fill them and forget them for a Mo.no sent,no one walking around the stands.they have worked for me for the past 10 years. good luck on how ever you do it.keep us posted. |
RE: Putting out corn!!!
Cabelas has a cool " holder." They have a plastic tree stump with two holes in the bottom. It holds about fifty pounds of corn, I think. Anyway, I sometimes use both - on the cob and off. Both work fine. The only thing, there is often a corn cob wedged up in some of the branches around my stand. Only thing I can figure is that the deer like to hide them up high to keep them away from other animals. :)

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Was talking to a game warden and he said they would be cracking down on baiting because of the CWD. They have been pretty lenient in past years because IL has such a big herd but said they want to eliminate close deer contact as much as possible so as to limit the spred of CWD.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Welcome to the site, I hope you love it here as much as I do! I have used both shelled and cob corn. I put corn out year-round and have never had a problem with the mold since the deer eat it so fast. I still use both depending on which piece of property I am on. On the property with a lot of turkey, I will use shelled corn as the turkey love it too. On the property without a lot of turkey I use the cob corn because it seems to last longer. I go through about 700 lbs. of corn a week so I try to make it go as far as I can. Matter of fact, we plant out own corn (about 75 acres) and will still have to buy a hopper or two each year. When I put the corn out, I usually put out about 50 to 100 pounds in each location and this will last for about three days. I like to spread it out in about a eight foot circle. Good luck!! -- CDH

RE: Putting out corn!!!
It depends on how much you want to spend and how it will last. I to put out corn. Cob is cheaper and will last longer before they have to work on it to get it. Kernal will get eat up in no time and cost a little more. Whatever you put out spread it around some so more than 1 or 2 deer can eat at the same time. The more the merrier I say. I put out 2 5gal. buckets full of kernal the other day at about noon and by 6:00 it was gone. Cobs been there a week with some left.
For the opponents. They are going to go eat in the corn field or off my pile, I ain' t drugging them. The sport is also finding them, positioning the stand in relation to bedding/trails properly, knowing when they are feeding and being able to make a clean kill shot. |
RE: Putting out corn!!!
From my past experiences with putting out corn all that ever came to my area were does. I think the bucks are smarter than this and may visit your corn but not till well after dark. As far as using corn ethical or not. Ted Nugent quoted that we dont go fishing without using any type of lure, the woods are my lake and i need all the help i can get to get them to bite . ( somethin to that effect) It really gave me a positive way of looking at it.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
This is how I make the PVC pipe style feeder.
Get a 4" Dia. Pvc pipe either 4,5,6ft. long. 1- connecter with a 45 degree coming out. 2-pvc 4" caps. 1- 3" long piece of the 4" pipe. Take the 45 connecter and put it on the end of the pipe, Then take the 3" piece and add on to the 45 connecter but not the part that is shooting the 45 out out. the other end so it will lenghtin the pipe. Then put a PVC cap on the 45 so the corn doesnt fall out of the bottom when hanging up right in the tree. The other cap is to cover the top of the pipe to keep debris and rain from getting inside. Then strap it to the tree, the 45 will be pointing away from the tree, so the deer can it out of the 45. |
RE: Putting out corn!!!
In NJ we' re allowed to bait in almost all areas and I bait with shelled corn with a hint of mollasses. I don' t bait as such to get the deer into the habit of having food on a daily basis. Rather, I throw down the shredded corn simply to make them stop to investigate so it' s long enough for me to get a shot.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Use whole corn. It works the best for me, and the deer are absolutely tearing it up! Can' t wait for season opener Oct 18.

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Lil E, I used to think the same way about big bucks not coming to corn until last year and this year. My good buddy shot a 142" deer in early bow season over corn at 5:30 pm when the sun set at 7:15pm. This year I have several nice bucks over corn during the daytime. Who knows, maybe the bucks are just ignorant in my area. I also like how Ted Nugent put it the way he did. Good hunting this year to everyone!!!

RE: Putting out corn!!!
Bigdawg,
I prefer shelled corn, but you have to dispense it somehow to keep deer from gorging on it. Before I started using a Moultrie feeder, which has a 30 gallon barrel, 6 volt motor and timer, solar recharger and 8 feet legs, I made my own out of 3 liter bottles. Simply get some clear plastic 2 or 3 liter bottles, fill them with shelled corn, and replace the cap. Before you throw them on the ground around your hunting area, cut several dime-sized holes in them. The deer will kick or roll the bottles with their noses, and will be rewarded when some of the corn spills out. This is not meant for real feeding of deer, it is meant to keep the deer occupied and interested while you set up for a shot. Just remember to pick up your bottles after the season. |
RE: Putting out corn!!!
As everyone said spread it out. If you go with one of the motorized feeders, look at the American Hunter. It has an option to add a capacitor that will zap squirrels and coons to keep them from emptying your feeder. A big problem around here.
