is it worth hunting???
I just recieved permission to hunt a 3000 acre chunk of land nearby that is going to be sold within the next year, but it has been completely logged and not much left standing. It is bordered by the Meramec River on one side and a 14000 acre state park that allows hunting and gets a lot of pressure especially in firearm season on the other. It is pretty much just a huge brush patch but it has always had a history of producing a lot of trophy class bucks. There are only five people with permission to hunt here, so is it worth checking out and how should I go about trying to hunt it?

RE: is it worth hunting???
i would say that it was worth hunting, especially if it has had a history of producing trophy deer.um... i dont know what the best way of hunting it would be?i would try sitting in there and let them come to you, you said that theres a state park nearby that allows hunting, i would let them drive the deer to you and then go from there, try scouting it out and see if you can find something.

Angus,
I would say that if the property' s a huge brush patch, it will be a deer magnet, especially when the hunters on the public land spook them your way. Any chance you could post a few pics of the terrain? The ground I hunt is super thick with briars and multi-floral rose bushes but it' s awesome cover for deer. I' ve found that the best stands are the ones next to the thickets, with a couple of shooting lanes into them. Go ahead and start looking for sign and set up near their travel routes. Jim |

I hunt a lot of cut overs. As Jimbo said, they are great places for deer to bed down and they also hold a lot of soft browse for the deer. Cutovers are GREAT places to hunt! Good luck! -- CDH

RE: is it worth hunting???
Look for the trails going in and out of the cut-over and hunt the fringes. Sometimes you can find a good stump that you can sit or stand on and have a good view of the area. Or find a tree to climb just inside the fringe.
Cut-overs get lots of activity. Don' t give up on it. |
RE: is it worth hunting???
I' m with young_gun on this. Find a trail or trails leading out from the state land and let the other hunters drive the deer to you. Sounds like a sweet setup to me.
