Gut that sucker ASAP. Why drag extra weight? The scavengers will clean up the gut pile real fast.

I wish I had your decision on my hands. Mine arrive at the truck in quarters on a pack board.

It is a cultural thing for sure. Growing up in WI we field dressed it where it fell. In SC everyone did it at home. I tried it and it was pretty easy. Hang 'em put a garbage can underneath them and baam. Dressed in 3 minutes. Then you get to hose em out. Gotta remember deer down south can be quit a bit smaller then their northern relatives. What ever works for you. Just dont wait too long to dress 'em out if your gonna do it at home good luck

As was said before, why drag all that extra weight? Plus, you want to cool that animal down and you don't want the guts in there to spread bacteria.

Much cleaner to leave the guts in the woods. No fuss, no muss. Scavengers clean it up in no time. Coyotes eat the heart, lung and liver that night. Then you have ravens and racoons move in.

Not to mention that if you swing by the gut pile the next day you might find something else to take a shot at.

Disclaimer: don't do this in areas with grizz.

I have never even thought of dragging one out of the woods with guts in it. I have heard of people hunting in areas they are required to bag the guts and take them out with them. These individuals still field dress the game to allow cooling.

Work smarter, not harder. Gut in the field if you've got a drag to do.

This is something dependent on area. Around here with guys running dogs they dont have the time to sit and gut the deer. They will load it in the truck that is tracking the dogs with radar and if they get a break will gut the deer. but not much down time when running dogs. Now if walk/ stalking or hunting from a stand always gut in the field. If its hot outside need to get ice in the cavity to cool the inside.

its a case by case thing where i hunt. One group i hunt with, they got a processing station right there on the farm, they skin and cut without ever gutting at all. One processor i use also guts for you. If its a hot day or its going to be awhile before i can get the deer out, or i have a long way to drag, ill gut in the field.
