RE: How much luck goes into be a successful deer hunter?
For any individual hunt, the luck factor can be anything 0-100%. But for someone to have consistent success, and take deer most any place they attempt to, it is not luck that carries them. I believe everyone can get lucky now and then, but to do so all the time is being a good skilled hunter.

I have always noticed that the harder I worked at something the luckier I got;)

So what everyone is saying is Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet. I agree! However, we can' t make it work all the time and that is where the luck comes in. Maybe the deer have good luck too.:)

RE: How much luck goes into be a successful deer hunter?
if theres one thing i HATE to be called its lucky...one kid in particular i dont think ever killed a deer but does hunt calls me lucky all the time...and tells people i dont even know that im the luckiest hunter there is because ive taken a buck and doe the same morning by 9am and was tagged out..sure theres SOME luck...but i take as much as possible out by scouting countless hours...practicing shooting...playing the wind as much as possible..and finding where the deer are once the war starts..im a rifle hunter and hunt state gamelands alot of the time....if you say thats not what a war sounds like come listen to it...sure its kinda luck that the deer pass within seeing distance while your there..but if you hunt hard and be patient and do your homework luck is taken out of most of the equation...me and my dad scouted for years to find a honey hole like we did....and its a great spot...we seen over 15 deer opening morning and had 3 down by 9am...we also walk farther then most guys in pa...about 2 miles one way...there was a study done here showing 4/5 hunters wont go more then 3/10s of a mile into the woods....my dads a very good hunter..just not so patient alot of times and he knows what a good stand location will be when the lead starts flying and where the deer will head....it took us a few years and tons of hours to find this spot....now deer hunting is great...we see about 6 deer an hour from that stand from the 3 time we hunted it about 3 hours each day and taken 5 deer from the same spot alone...i dont care what anyone says im not that lucky...we do our homework and hunt smart and it all pays off in the end...theres always some luck..

RE: How much luck goes into be a successful deer hunter?
Luck does have SOME part in hunting success!
Some people are able to hunt in areas that have more deer than others, some are able to hunt in areas that produce better racks than others! I have seen some really dumb hunters that were able to hunt very good places, which makes it easier to harvest a nice deer. I am not easily impressed by huge racks anymore for that very reason! It is too easy to " pay" for a good rack these days! I do feel that you can " make your own luck" though. Scouting, preparation and attention to detail will get you a long ways! Also, there is the old " pure luck!" There is just no acounting for that! But I' d still rather make my own luck than to just be lucky. Day in, day out. Year after year. Knowledge and skill will take you farther in the long run than luck! |
RE: How much luck goes into be a successful deer hunter?
Sure, luck plays a part in all hunts, but I work my tail off to ensure that I don' t have to be particularly lucky to get a quality deer. I believe the more work you do prior to season makes things that much easier during season. Everything from practicing with your gun/bow on a regular basis, to setting out food plots, to pre-season scouting, and even taking part in this message board are things that make each of us better hunters and more prepared for situations that we may encounter while hunting. So to answer your question, I' d rather be good than lucky, because being good means being consistant. But it never hurts to have a little luck on your side.

I agree with almost everyone who' s posted on this thread. The harder you work, the more luck you have. But until you can control the weather, luck will always play at least a small role in your success. For example, if it' s windy and rainy on your only weekends to hunt and the deer are all holed up.......that' s bad luck. [>:] But if you' ve done what most of these guys have suggested, then luck should have very little to do with it.
