I do`nt know if it would be a whole bunch different except when you get into the older deer then I would imagine they would pull a tooth and cut it and count the spring and winter rings to age the deer.

It may cause some problems aging older deer, say older than 3 or so, but for younger deer they are still going to lose there milk tooth so you should be able to age them up to three at least.

First of all, even in the "perfect" situation aging deer jaws becomes difficult after 3.5 yrs. Tooth wear varies throughout the country depending on diet. However, it can be used to accurately age deer up to at least 1.5 yrs everywhere because of the replacement of the 3rd premolar. After that the diet plays a huge role in tooth wear. Even with these variations, with a little experience one should be able to age any deer anywhere with a fair amount of accuracy; after all the tooth wear and replacement method is never 100% correct.

buck59 is right, if you want to be absolutely sure of the age, pull and incisor and have cementum annuli counted.

Good reply oldlinewalker. In a study on aging deer via tooth wear and eruption it was found that 45% of the expert aging was in error. The conclusion was that there were only 3 age classes that one could bet on: fawn, yearling and adult.
