Deer antlers
 

I was just wanting to hear yalls opinions on the best way to judge a deers antlers by how big,wide,and tall they are by just looking at them through the binoculars. I would say judge them using the ears. The reason I am bringing this up is because I killed a deer the other day and dropped him in his steps with my browning 270 in the edge of a green patch and field from probably two hundred yards, but I was looking at him through the binoculars and he looked like around a good eight or 9 point deer. Altough he turned out to be a small 6 point. BTW I did not know really how to judge this time.

The average buck, with his ears in an alert position, has an ear tip-to-tip spread of 16 inches. His ears will measures six inches from the base to the tip. The circumference of his eye is four inches, and from the center of the eye to the end of his nose should measure about eight inches.

Yup ears will help tell the story just dont look at the antlers to much, I cant tell you how many stories end with then I shot his antler.

Just heard a story like that the other night.

I use the ears to judge but still have to get a good look its tuff on some deer while some others you jsut know at first sight.

time time time. spend enough time looking at deer and you become pretty good at it. i do not have to use anything to judge a deer in my area (key words my area). but the best way would be to use the ears. go around to a few different mature mounts and measure the length of the ear from base to tip. figure the average and you have a pretty solid platform for judging a mature bucks rack.
