Something to think about, any big game in North America can be taken with .308 or 30-06. With that being said .308 ammo would probably be easier to get in a pinch.

Sorry to get off track but someone mentioned the 308 being more accurate then the 30-06,is there any real proof of this?makes me think of carlos hathcock,he used a 06 before the army made him switch to the 308.not trying to start an arguement just throwing this out there.

If you are going to hunt moose or elk id go with the 06 since the slight advantage in power lets you shoot 180 grain bullets more effectivly.

I shoot 243 but if you want to be able to shoot turkeys and or other birds. Shotgun would do fine. Slugs for deer and turkey loads for turkeys and reagular ol field loads for game birds. Slugs kick the heck out of you but they will put a deer on its rear end in a heartbeat. Idk what kind of ranges you hunt deer at but slugs won't be very good out past 200 to 250 yards but a good 12 ga shotgun will take any game in North America and most other game around the world. So will 30-06 with the exception of all the birds

Sounds to be like you did good !

Recommend you have the barrel hand lapped, put a "good" drop-in trigger in it, replace the recoil pad with a pachmayr decelerator pad and adjust the LOP to fit you ~ head to the range to break in the barrel.

100 rounds later (giving proper barrel break in), buy 4 boxes of different ammo, all apporpriate to the game you will be using it for & let you new gun tell you which ammo it likes the best.

That's how I do it anyway (semi custom using a production rifle).

Browning X-Bolt in .308 with a Leupold VXR 3-9X40. That is my next whitetail and bear rig.The red dot in the crosshairs is a great addition in dim light on a dark body.

Browning A-Bolt Hunter in a 7mm-08,great Rifle with a hinged clip that can removed and the lower cover closed!Fancy No-frill Satin Finish on a blued barrel thats free-floating,awesomely smooth and tight bolt-action.The 7mm-08 is a light recoil caliber with several grain bullets to choose from in 120,140 and 150 I believe!

The Savage is another good Rifle,CZ's are well made and the Weatherby's,Ruger or Kimber is another very well made Rifle!

As far as scopes are concerned I really like the Leupold Rifleman 3X9X40mm scopes in matte black using Millet rings and bases!
