20 gauge 2 3/4" 3 buck

Anyone ever tried shooting a 20 gauge 2 3/4" 3 buck for deer? This is the weapon of choice for my little brother this year and we patterned it yesterday. Not bad out to 25 yards, which is his max range. There are 20 pellets in it and I am wondering how hard it will hit deer at 25 yards? The two kinds we tested were Federal and Remington, both 3 buck. What are your ideas on this? Thx.

If his max shot is within 25 yards, I' d shoot a slug.

My personal preference is double ought buck or slugs, but if he keeps his shots to 25 yards and under he will knock them flat!

Unfortunately, no slugs are allowed in this area.

I shoot 00 buck in my 12 gauge, but can' t find any for 20 gauge 2 3/4" shells.

3 buck is the best I can do. Will this still work at 25 yds. or less? It patterns well, but I' m not sure if the power is there. This will be his 1st deer and I don' t want him to wound it due to underpowered gun...

I killed my first deer with a Remington 1100 2 3/4 inch 20 guage and #3 buck.
The deer was only ten yards from me. The first shot he didnt hardly break his stride but the second shot put him down. Im sure the first shot would have done the trick but the buck may have ran 50 yards before he fell. Definatly keep the shots no more than 20 or 25 yards. My feeling is if your brother keeps his shots very close it should be sufficient but try to keepem within 20 yards. Bow range.
My second deer was standing a little over 20 yards away. I shot him twice also and he still ran 70 yards before piling up. I then decided that I needed a 12 guage.

It' ll do fine if he keeps his shots close but here' s an idea.....

if he' s got to get them in that close, why not use a bow!!!! :D :D :D

He' s only 13 and he' s never shot a bow powerful enough to ethically kill a deer. He' s got a 25lber that I have him shoot just for the fun of it and to start working on his form. He is still a little young for the 12 gauge, but next year will be his year for the 12.

try no. 2buck w/full choke tube 18 pellets should get you out to 35 yds. Its made by Federal. Sorry coolbreeze that comes in 3" . see if your gun handles 3"

No can do. It only handles 2 3/4" shells. Patterns well out to 25 yards, haven' t shot #3 buck past that yet. Will have to see in a few weeks here.
