Best Guns For White Tails?
Hey Everybody,
Just curious on what are some well known shotgun and rifle guns for white tails. I will be attending hunting classes the upcoming week. So I figure I look around and see whats new. My cousin is always thier to help me, but he goes by soley experience, just wanted to see that others think. Thanks .308 caliber I heard is best for white tails but could be mistaken |
30-30 .308 30-06 .243 is what I use .270 if most of your shots are I've 150 yards umm 45-70 7mm for same thing as 270. 7mm-08 25-06. Those are probably the best rifle calibers.

20 guage slugs 12guage slugs will hurt on both ends of the gun all slugs kick like a mule but they are great for deer up to about 200 yards max

A 30-30 is a nice gun if you are shooting 130 yds or less. It is small and light.

I have or had 30-30, 30-06, 270, 280, and 300WSM but once I put a 257 Wthby Magnum in my hand the rest became my back up weapon. The 257 is pricey on ammo, but it will remain my primary whitetail rifle for the rest of my life. I use my 300 WSM as my still hunting gun because I have it in a Browning BLR lever action and it's easy to tote around the woods and get a secondary shot if needed, but the 257 is always out opening morning.

One gun deer hunter ~ noth to south, east to west.
.270 win. ..............and a winchester model 70 wouldn't be a bad rifle to have in your hands ! |
If using a shotgun a 12 gauge with a rifled barrel is best. I use a Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel. Use Sabot slugs, a little pricier but well worth the extra range. I bought my Mossberg used for $250. Currently using 2 3/4 Hornaday SST's.

Yeah my grand daddy has a 257 weatherby and first day he took it out he got the biggest deer of his life but where we hunt you have to use a different bullet because it won't expand if you don't we hunt nothing I've 200 yards and he shot his at 75 yards

I shoot 100 gr spire point noslers, I have also used 100 gr Barnes TSX. Most don't ever take a step afterwards. The deer I hunt average 175-215 live weight and my shots average between 60-150 yards. The 25 caliber is light, but it carries a lot of power and the modern bullet selections make up any shortcomings concerning caliber, IMO.
