I have taken deer with a .243 (very partial to that gun), .270, 25-06(Best deer caliber ever invented imo), and 7mm rem. mag. All killed deer just the same, period......

agreed. Don't get me wrong a 7mm mag has it's place for long range shots but most deer are shot at less than 100 yards and a 7 mag at that range will blow up both front shoulders and half the back straps will be blood shot. 30-06 30-30 243 270 308 7mm-08 25-06 are all fine deer rifles.

If I'm not using a bow, I like to hunt the power-pipeline that runs through my property. I love long range shooting, so I'm going to have a gun-bullet combo that performs well at long ranges. Most of my kills are in the 100 to 300 yard range with several over 400. My line gun is a Browning A-Bolt .270 wsm. I shoot either Win. Silvertips or Fed. Nosler, both in ballistic tips. They are great long range bullets. I'm also thinking about trying some Fed. Accubonds. I prefer 130 grain bullets. The only problem with the bt's is at close range they will put a hole the size of a softball in the deer. Besides the .270, 30-06, and .308, I would also look into a .260 and .280. One of the sweetest long range guns I have ever shot was a .264 mag., but the ammo is nearly impossible to find around here.

Well I've had great success with my Rem 870 20 gauge. I shoot Copper solid slugs and its accurate out to 200 yards.

I am sure its lethal out to 250, but i would not try it unless it was to put a wounded one down.

But it depends on what your looking for, brush, heavy cover and close shots, nothing could beat a 12 gauge with Lightfield slugs

Long distance, out to 400 yards the Hoosier 358 is a great gun

I was told the best whitetail gun was a 25/06 , but they are not legal in Indiana (yet)

well you said guns but i figured your talking about different cartridges.

i would have to say those are the most tried and true cartridges out there.

Depends on where I'm hunting....
 

I hunt a couple of different terrains, I use the .308 on the piece that I can reach out to 300 yds. I'll use my .444 (open sights) down in my swap where I have a hard time seeing 80 yds. Then I'll pull out my 12 ga. (rifled barrel and scoped) when hunting down state in the "shotgun" zone of Lower Michigan. All this said I prefer my bow over all of them, and tend to be tagged out prior to Firearm Season. My CVA hasn't seen the light of day for years.

I use a .308 with 150gr Remington Core-lokt centerfire rounds. I have never had to look for a deer. Usually drops them on the spot.

I love my .308 it does the job.

North American Hunting Club November 2012 magazine just had an interesting article written by Richard Mann regarding ballistic tests from a bunch of deer hunting cartridges as well as post mortem results. Here's a link to get you to the on-line magazine.

The conclusion was that it really doesn't matter which cartridge you use so long as it is legal and the shooter is proficient with it.
