Congrats to you and him, would love to hear the story
Well, I promised him a hunt on our ranch if he wanted to try and shoot a big mule deer. He couldn't take hunters ed until after our seasons had past. So he asked about whitetails. I found a place in Texas. No high fence, no fees and fair chase.
He finished hunter ed on Saturday evening. So, on Sunday we decided to give it a whirl. We sat on a wheat field adjacent some thick brush and mesquite. As soon as it was light enough to see, the buck came around working does. He didn't give us a chance and worked away. As we watched other deer off in the distance, he chased a doe right back in front of us. He was at 140 yards. The kid said he was ready. As the deer walked away, I stopped him and the kid took the shot. Clean lung shot. The buck only went 100 yards into the brush. It was nice. A great first hunt for my son. He has helped me or accompanied me on many hunts here at home. He has already guided an antelope hunt. It was special for me, to be able to guide him and be a spectator for his first hunt.
He shoots an H&R Handi Rifle in .243.
I did scout it hard...and this deer was average of the deer in the area.
